SAYING a final farewell to her son was never going to be easy for the mum of Adam Cooper who collapsed and died while playing the sport he loved.

But Joy Cooper-Crippin, 57, said she could burst with pride after hearing stories about how much the 31-year-old was loved during his funeral.

While it has been a difficult few weeks for the family following his sudden death, Joy has taken some comfort from knowing how many lives her son has touched.

She said: "I don't think it will ever sink in what has happened.

"But I'm so pleased that everyone said what a genuine and nice lad he was.

"It makes me feel so proud.

"No-one had anything bad to say about him."

Hundreds of people packed into Newchurch Parish Church on Church Lane in Culcheth on Friday to pay tribute to the Culcheth Eagles player who died on July 1 during an away game at Runcorn ARLFC.

Many mourners dressed in a rugby league shirt – a fitting tribute to Adam who had been playing the sport since the age of 16.

His death sent shockwaves across the rugby league community.

His family have since confirmed that the former Padgate High School pupil died as a result of acute cardiac failure.

Emotions ran high during the service which included All Things Bright and Beautiful and Go Gentle by Robbie Williams – a song which reminds Adam's sister Natalie of her older brother.

Beauty and the Beast was also played – a song loved by his youngest daughter Ava – and Tell me it's not true from Blood Brothers.

"I was so touched by the amount of people who took the time to come," said Joy.

"It's hard to put a figure on how many but I would say around 600.

"The church was full – it was amazing thing to see.

"There were even representatives from the Runcorn team."

Since his death, thousands of pounds have been donated to help support the family and the fundraising target has been increased twice.
